Eight in Hospital, Five Serious in Refinery Fire

Eight in hospital, five seriously injured in refinery fire

Several workers at the Come By Chance refinery remain in critical condition after a fire at the facility on Friday.

Initial reports of the explosion are now downplayed in Come By Chance, and people familiar with the incident describe it more as a brief fire outbreak that was quickly contained and extinguished.

And while it may have been brief, it was intense enough to send eight workers to the hospital, and five of them were flown to St. John’s for emergency care.

The incident took place just after 4:00 pm on Friday at one of the divisions of this vast oil refinery, recalling the tragedy of 1998, when two workers were killed and another was injured.

It also comes at a time of renewed optimism for a half-century-old enterprise that is in the process of transitioning to producing renewable aviation fuel under the Braya brand.

Speaking to VOCM News this morning outside my home. Come By Chance Mayor Carol Molloy says she received a phone call from the company’s president Friday night, promising all the support the city and workers need.

Molloy noted that it is too early to speculate on the cause of what happened here, noting that the priority now is the well-being of those in the hospital and their families.
