When you update Windows, there is always a chance that something will happen that will interfere with the work. This time, however, it looks like the Windows 11 22H2 update is causing serious problems for gamers equipped with Nvidia graphics cards.
According to numerous posts on social media, Reddit, and Microsoft’s own support forums, users are seeing noticeable performance drops while gaming after updating their computers.
For example, user emay007 posted on the Windows 11 subreddit: “I just updated to 22H2 and am dealing with extremely erratic FPS in all of my games. I have good gaming specs and had no issues before (Ryzen 3600, 1070 TI, 16GB RAM). The games are practically unplayable.”
This was backed up by ChoPT, who stated “I’ve had major performance issues, both on desktop and especially in games (it also broke Gsync completely). Randomly drops to ~30fps from ~120 in non-graphically intensive tests. Screen tearing like crazy.
There is no immediate fix right now. However, several users have reported that rolling back the update fixed the issue for them. This is just anecdotal evidence at this point and it may not work for everyone.
The issue does not appear to affect AMD or Intel GPU users, suggesting it may be related to how the Windows 11 update interacts with the Nvidia driver. The idea was apparently backed up by Nvidia software quality assurance specialist Manuel Guzmán, who asked Reddit users to fill out a driver feedback form so Nvidia could look into what could happen. Hopefully this will lead to a quick fix release. For its part, Microsoft has yet to release a remedy.
This is not the first Windows 11 bug that has had a significant impact on performance. We’ve seen AMD users run into similar issues with game data leaks, Windows 11 TPM slowing down Ryzen processors, and File Explorer errors that hog your memory.
If you find that your game’s performance has dropped significantly after installing the Windows 11 22H2 update, you can revert to a previous version and see if that helps. Unfortunately, there is nothing else to do but wait for a fix.
