Community Focus: Kujay > News

Happy Friday Guardians! Welcome to one of our favorite Bungie.net community areas this week! This week we’re talking to a content creator who has a pretty cool job, Kujay!

Hey Kujay! Thank you for taking the time to chat with us! So let’s start with a little background. Who are you, what are your pronouns and where are you from?

Hello, my name is Kujay (he/he). I’m an aircraft designer by day and Fate Content creator by night! I grew up in a small town in eastern Kansas before moving to Southern California after college.

Wait, aircraft designer? Yes, we’ll have to touch that in a moment. But above all, what brought you to games and content creation?

I got into gaming at a very young age, when I was only four years old. I just started going to kindergarten and there was a Super Nintendo that all the kids could play. The first game I ever played was Yoshi Island (still an amazing game to this day!), and oh my god, I was immediately hooked! Fast forward 20 years, and after moving to SoCal, I found that I had MUCH more free time than I was used to in school (aerospace engineering term papers are no joke!). Then, shortly after launching Rise of Iron, my streaming friend started pushing me to try streaming for myself. After pushing him away for a few months, I eventually gave in and bought a PS4 webcam. I found streaming to be a lot of fun (and something I’m really good at), so much so that I’ve been doing it for almost six years now!

It looks like my kindergarten. 😊 Okay, big question – how do you balance full-time work and content creation?

Over the years, I have found it difficult to balance my professional career with the content creation side of my life. I streamed a LOT more in the early years, getting streams every Friday through Monday (usually with lots of Trials of Osiris help!). However, as the years went by and the responsibilities at my day job grew, I began to cut back on the amount of content I promoted. In the last two years, I’ve started to pay more attention to YouTube, as it’s something I can do “piece by piece” rather than having the camera work live. As for Twitch, now I’m basically a “weekend warrior”, streaming only on Saturdays and Sundays. It was hard to juggle the two sides of my life, but it was ENDLESSLY helpful. How many people design airplanes for a week and then return home to a successful broadcast and YouTube channel over the weekend? This is something I don’t take for granted!

God this sounds like a wild ride and you seem to have done such a great job of keeping it going. So you mentioned Yoshi Island, but how did you find Fate?

So what’s interesting is that I actually took a pretty long break from gaming when Fate came calling. After getting hooked on Skyrim in my senior year of high school, I didn’t play games at all in my freshman or sophomore year of college. However, I was once again drawn to the PS4 remaster of The Last of Us (an AMAZING game, by the way!), which I didn’t get a chance to play when it first came out. And then, as if by “fate” (winking), a few days after the end Last of usI received an email from Sony inviting me to play in an upcoming Fate alpha. I have always been more Call of Duty baby grew up but a lot of my childhood friends were MASSIVE Halo fans. When I asked them about the next Bungie project with Fatethey all encouraged me to give it a try, describing the game as a mix Call of Duty, Haloand “Space Skyrim“. Shortly after that, I decided to try the alpha and I was immediately hooked. The gunfight was the best I have ever seen. And now, over eight years later, I’m still helplessly dependent on Fate since I first landed at the spaceport.

Day one player, good to see it! What type of content do you prefer to focus on when streaming or making videos?

I like to focus on endgame content inside Fate, focusing more on the PvP side, be it Trials of Osiris or Iron Banner. I also love GM Nightfalls and raids, and I especially enjoy the first day raid with my group!

It’s super cool! Endgame content can be very challenging so having content creators like you helping to educate and shepherd others is really great to see. For new players, what would you like to know before starting or at least at the beginning of your game? Fate travel?

To be honest, I wish someone could tell me how thoroughly I’m going to dive into Fate universe and the wider Bungie community. How am I still playing the same game eight years later?! Hahaha, just kidding =). But seriously, I would like to know how important it was to find a close-knit group of people to play with. Fate With. I played solo for a decent amount of time during vanilla D1 before I found my way to the LFG (Looking for Group) websites. If I hadn’t been captured by the magic of the OG Vault of Glass, most likely I would have stopped playing. Fate in those early days. The game is much more fun to play when you have friends to dive into more complex content with and share builds and ideas with. Because of this, I’m incredibly excited about the introduction of Guardian Ranks and the in-game Fireteam Finder. Fate 2 next year. I think this will serve as a catalyst for thousands of players to start forming their own groups of friends and discover the true “end game” Fate.

Hell yes! Since you are focusing on endgame content, do you have any advice for players who want to improve their gaming skills?

If you are someone who wants to dive deeper into the endgame experience in Fate and improve your skills, the best thing you can do is connect with other players and start creating a group of friends that you can play with. Fate With. Bye Fate can be played solo, the full potential of the game is unlocked when you have a formed group of people you can rely on, both in casual PvE environments and in the trenches of the Trials. Teamwork really makes the dream come true and over time you will become a better player by collaborating with other like minded players.

Okay, time to ask, what is your main character and favorite subclass?

I’m probably drawing a lot of ire here, but Hunter is my main character and I’ve been hopelessly addicted to Stompees for the better part of five years now. Going back to Modern Warfare 2, my favorite way to play FPS games has always been speed, speed, speed! To that end, I am absolutely LOVE the Arc 3.0 Hunter. Speed Booster is just *kiss the chef* and Gathering Storm might just be the coolest Super in the game right now. I used Arcstrider from seasons 2 to 8, so getting back home to my old man with Arc 3.0 was amazing!

Oh yes, moving fast in video games is always fun! 😊 What mood does your channel support?

My channel tends to be on the edge between entertainment and education. In a moment we’ll delve into knowledge Fate universe and start thinking about future stories. Then something completely ridiculous will happen in the next Crucible match (at the expense of my opponent OR myself, both happen often!). We will often talk about builds or the state of the game in general, while maintaining a rather light-hearted atmosphere and lots of laughter. Just like the balance between my work and content creation, my channel thrives on its duality between education and entertainment.

Entertaining and educational, but at the same time light-hearted? Looks like my place!

Okay, time to end our interview, but I really wanted to ask because so far you have been very inspiring in our conversation. What do you want every New World who joins the Guardians to know?

With the current New Light experience, it can be overwhelming once you’ve completed your exploration of the spaceport. You are called to the Tower and given quest after quest after quest. I would advise you to choose only ONE of these quests and complete it alone. By the time you’ve completed this first quest, there’s a good chance you’ll have tried out new weapons, increased your power a bit, and generally gotten a feel for the game loop. Fate. And once most people get this far, gameplay alone is usually enough to get them hooked!

And finally, where can people find you?

I stream on Twitch every Saturday and Sunday morning, uploading videos to YouTube from time to time. I am also very active in the country Twitterwith tons of hot takes and shenanigans to keep just about anyone entertained!
