Newark airport evacuated due to ‘suspicious package’

Police evacuated part of Newark Airport and delayed multiple flights Sunday due to “suspicious package reports” on the 21st anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, Port Authority officials said.

Police “immediately” cleared the lower level of Terminal C “as a precautionary measure” after learning about the package around 12:45 p.m., officials said.

The floor reopened at 1:45 p.m., but FAA officials did not allow flights to resume arriving at the airport until 2:30 p.m. The glitch caused at least 59 flights to be delayed, officials said.

Nervous pilots took to social media to express bewilderment about what was happening.

“America is stuck at Newark airport on the most tragic day in our recent history of lockdown and frightened travelers get no information,” one frustrated flyer tweeted.

Another traveler said she felt “trapped”.

“Does anyone know what’s going on at Newark Airport? [that’s] causing a security lockdown, essentially leaving us all in terminal C, levels 1 and 2, trapped [and] Missed flights?” — User Sloopyy tweeted.
